La Colegiata de Santa María la Mayor is the soul of Alquézar and its most recognizable image. It stands on the site of an ancient 9th-century Arab castle, from which the town takes its name (al-Qasr, “the fortress”). After the Christian reconquest, the site was transformed into a highly important religious and defensive complex, with strategic and spiritual functions.
Its interior houses a Romanesque cloister, unique in Aragon, decorated with frescoes depicting biblical scenes and the lives of saints. Also noteworthy are its Gothic church, the main altarpiece, the Baroque organ, and the former sacristy. From the exterior courtyard and battlements, there are spectacular views of the Vero River canyon and the entire natural setting of the Somontano.
We recommend visiting it at your leisure or on a guided tour so you don’t miss a thing.
